General Information

Dwarves are one of the most ancient races, not only in Everwind Country, but throughout the known world in general. They are a stout, sturdy people, with a culture almost as diverse from group to group as that of Humans. Their existence is known by other races, but typically they remain fairly secluded in their mountain homes. Dwarves have been known to live longer than 250 years, an earth-given longevity much the envy of other mortal races. Other than height and a more stocky build, Dwarves are identical to Humans. Their hair comes in browns, blacks and reds. Their irises have been seen in colors of black, brown, green, hazel and blue. Males tend to sport large amounts of facial hair, often braided or adorned with trinkets. Females, contrary to popular belief, do not have profuse facial hair like the males, but are facially similar to Human females. Long hair is popular with both sexes. Dwarven females are prone to softer, more round facial features, and also contrary to popular belief, they are not always fat or bulbous in body.

Most Dwarves reside in mountain holds. The race, as a whole, often places a strong value on courage and strength, as well as honor to their kin. They all value their privacy, and quite often prefer to remain secluded from the other races. There are some who leave the mountains, dwelling among other races in other kingdoms. The reasons for such ones to leave can range from lust for adventure, to more serious reasons, such as exile.

Aging

When a dwarf enters the final stages of life they will start to grow a flaky, rock-like exterior, as if their skin is turning into stone. This process is not painful, but it can be uncomfortable. It is simply a sign of the dwarf's age. When a dwarf does expire, the body will continue to change until after a few years postmortem, the body has become entirely stone.

Diet

Beards

Beards in Dwarf society are very important, they can depict anything from status to occupation to a record of heroic deeds.

Interspecies Relations

The Dwarven nations tend to keep to themselves, and are rather secluded from the other races. At times there are encounters, but no real lasting or regular contact.

Magical Affinities

The Holds of Everwind Country

There are five Dwarven holds in Everwind Country.

Located in the northern mountains of the same name, the Mwyn'dor Dwarves are renowned for their metalworking and smithing. Like their neighbors in the Human kingdom of Silveria, these Dwarves have a strong affinity for mining. Some say they guard secret tunnels leading into the Frostlands. Some Mwyn'dor Dwarves have an affinity towards fire magic. These magically-gifted ones make for the most talented smelters and forgers.

The residents of the central mountain range of the same name. They are known as great engineers and tinkerers. While not focused as much on magic as other races, the steam-driven machinations of the Haen'mor Dwarves are the things of legend. They value not only the usual traits that Dwarves do, but also place importance on individual intelligence. Some say that the Haen'mor Dwarves are the keepers of many secrets.

The great stone cutters of the southern mountain range of the same name. They are the best masons of any race in Everwind Country. Since ???, hey have lost much territory to the Grud'mok Dwarves. There are some from this Hold that possess a latent talent with earth magic. It is rumored that the Stein'jar Dwarves have vast treasures hidden away in long forgotten underground cities.

Known for their gem cutting, the Ru'tul Dwarves are as wondrous and elusive as the gems they cut. They are seldom seen outside of their mountains, and are the most secluded of the Dwarven Holds native to Everwind Country. They are rumored to have many secrets hidden away, and some maintain the legend that there is a dragon locked away in the depths of their mountains.

This Hold is not native to Everwind Country. It is considered common knowledge that these Dwarves invaded the Stein'jar mountain range from the South, and that they originated in the Forgotten Lands. They are master siege-smiths, with some of the most powerful and ingenious cannon designs. As far as can be discerned, they have no natural affinities towards any given school of magic.

Origins

Many believe that Dwarves and Humans share a common ancestor from far ancient times, but there has been nothing conclusive on this theory. Others still believe that Dwarves began as golems, earth-born beings meant to protect the depths of the planet, somehow turned into mortal beings. Once again, this theory has no evidence. All theories on Dwarven origin are only speculation.
