Intelligent Species

There are many species in the world of Mithnir that are considered intelligent. These are mostly comprised of the mortal races, those who make up almost the entirety of the population of the various nations and kingdoms in the world. To fit into the classification as an intelligent species, a species must have a degree of intelligence that sets them apart from monsters and animals, as well as a level of self-awareness that animals and beasts simply do not have. Intelligent species are the ones that divide into clans, tribes, nations and kingdoms. They are the ones that build or utilize tools, weapons, shelter, and in general display higher levels of sentience and sagacity.

Beast Races

The beast races are those that have physical form or traits that more closely resemble the non-sapient animals and creatures of the world, be it partial anatomy such as that of the Lepirians, or fully non-humanoid anatomy such as the Kobolds or Gnolls. There are kingdoms or nations of the beast races, but in large they have not been as forward in kingdom-building as the Telluric or Alfeyren races. Additionally, many beast races found themselves the subjects of enslavement or annexation as other more ambitious kingdoms evolved, leaving many with second-class citizenship in some nations, or simply as minorities among various populations.

Telluric Races

The telluric races are those with the most humanoid appearances which are not elven (alfeyan) in nature. These races tend to be among the most ambitious when it comes to nation-building, and oftentimes are the most numerous in a given population. Many of these races have different subraces, often classified by differences in skin tones, phenotypes and anatomical predispositions. Typically when referring to telluric races, the general race name is applied rather than the specific subrace. As an exception to this, many of the telluric races themselves will refer to their own with their subrace to differentiate.

Elf/Alfeyr Races

The elven (alfeyan) species are the other of the most humanoid races. Nearly all of these races have pointed ears, though to which degree and size varies. They are also different in terms of morphology, though retaining the typical bipedal and humanoid anatomy. Unlike the telluric races, the elven races all feature longer canine teeth not unlike fangs. They are not unlike the telluric races in their drive to build kingdoms and nations, though many exist as subjects of telluric kingdoms.

Feye Races

The races of feye are those that do not fit into any of the other three categories. The races of feye were once associated with the concept of magic, but in recent times they are understood to simply be another form of mortal life that does not closely enough resemble other races to fit into the same category. Like the beast races, most races of feye never carried out much nation-building, meaning that most live as citizens of the kingdoms of other races.
